NPCs (Non-Player Characters) are the people and creatures in your world that aren't controlled by players. They include allies, enemies, quest-givers, merchants, and everyone else the party encounters.
Ordinary people with minimal combat ability - shopkeepers, farmers, townsfolk
Experts in specific fields - blacksmiths, priests, scholars, guards
Capable individuals who can assist or accompany the party
Enemies and adversaries with their own goals and motivations

For more complex NPCs, use class levels or modify monster stat blocks.
Name: Roll on a name table or use a generator
Trait: Give them one memorable characteristic
Goal: What do they want from the party?
Secret: Something they're hiding
